Can I skip a flight but get on the connecting flight and then check my bags in?
im planning on getting a round trip ticket from Seattle Wa to Cairns, AUS. the return flight would be Cairns to Sydney to LAX to SEA. i was planning on visiting Sydney on the last few days of my trip and wanted to buy a one way to Sydney from Cairns. would i be able to skip that first flight on my roundtrip ticket from cairns to Sydney and just hop on the connector flight from Sydney to LAX and also check my bags? My ticket will be purchased through delta airlines.

Nope. As soon as you miss a leg of the flight, the rest of your reservation is cancelled.
You should be able to buy what’s known as an open jaw ticket, SEA-CNS and SYD-SEA for about the same price as a SEA-CNS round trip. That appears to be what you really want.
